There are paintings of wine being made and being consumed in celebration since the time of Noah. In this lecture I explore not just these but also the contribution that ‘wine art’ makes to our colourful world. Who has not marvelled at the creativity and beauty of wine labels? Of these it is perhaps the labels of Mouton Rothschild, that are of most interest in this context. Each year since 1945, the Rothschilds have invited celebrated artists, as diverse as Chagall, Salvador Dali, and Picasso to contribute an original painting for the label of that vintage. On a lighter side who could forget the wonderful artwork of Ronald Searle that adorned Oddbins’ catalogues for many years?
